UK Hotel Industry News
UK’s hotel industry is booming. The worth of the UK hotel industry has been estimated to be £3.65b, according to the PKF hospitality research.

The British Hospitality Association’s (BHA) annual Trends and Statistics revealed that over 140 new hotels were opened in the UK over the 12 months ending August 2007. The new hotels provide 13,000 rooms, up from 11,000 new rooms in the preceding year.

As a survey carried out by the BHA showed, 64% of the new hotels in the UK were budget hotels.

From August 2006–August 2007, investments made for re-launches, renovation and modernisation of existing properties – which reached £3b – exceeded the amount of investments made in any previous year.

The city with the largest part of new developments in the UK hotel industry was cited to be London, where 19 new hotels totalling 2,700 rooms were opened.

The Whitbread Hotel Company saved its position as the largest hotel chain in the UK by the number of bedrooms. Its Premier Inn chain had over 488 hotels with more than 32,600 bedrooms by September 2007.

InterContinental was only a little behind, with 32,540 bedrooms throughout its 241 UK hotels; while the third position was taken by the budget Travelodge chain, which had over 18,950 bedrooms across 310 hotels.
In other hotel news, in March 2007, pressured by Caterer, the BHA and some hotel groups, the Government ruled out bed tax. Also, the Government initiated a crackdown on rouge hotel employers who pay employees less than the minimum wage.
MBD business development experts believe that the UK hotel market will continue to grow during the coming years ending 2012. The overall increase is predicted to be 17% in real terms to £11.7b.

The main development factors are supposed to be Liverpool becoming the European capital of culture in 2008 as well as London holding the Olympics and Paralympics game in 2012.
